知道美国要提供的是个人陈述personal statement，欧洲是叫动机信motivation letter，除了名称叫法不同外，二者真正的区别你知道吗？很多人都以为动机信和个人陈述是完全相同的东西，因为二者都是申请人向录取委员会陈述申请理由，但其实二者是有不同的侧重点的。

动机信，顾名思义，就是你为什么要申请这所学校，给招生官充足的理由给你offer，那么我们在原因里可以说清楚我为什么要申请这个专业、学校哪里吸引我、该专业对我有哪些帮助、对未来职业的构想。通过动机信，录取委员会希望了解申请者的申请动机、学业和职业规划、相关背景。在陈述合理的申请动机时，建议分析一下对该专业或者专业课程的了解和认识，指出你最感兴趣的方向和课程（如有）。如果能说出申请院校该专业的优势以及特点、你最喜欢的教授或者项目，录取委员会会觉得你做了不少的研究。

清晰的学业和职业规划也很重要，所以要提及你想从中学到什么、它对你的职业发展有什么帮助、你的职业目标是什么。最好分析一下你的职业目标和申请的专业的具体关联，不一定特别具体，但要有逻辑

由于申请的竞争很激烈，要脱颖而出则需要展现给录取委员会看到你有哪些地方适合这个专业，如个性特点、教育背景、活动背景、专业资格、工作背景等。.最后可以提一下自己申请该专业的优势、已经做的准备或者可能的贡献。文风偏理性和逻辑，不建议天马行空。

通过个人陈述，录取委员会希望从个人经历和背景的角度去了解申请者的申请动机、是否适合本专业、为学习本专业做了哪些准备。考虑到激烈的申请竞争，你需要展现给录取委员会看到你个人方面有哪些地方适合这个专业，如个性特点、爱好、天赋等。

不同于动机信需要非常理性地阐述你的动机，个人陈述侧重了解你的个人经历中是什么促发了你对所申请专业的兴趣、为将来学习该专业打下了哪些基础。可以直抒胸臆地表达、也可以平淡如水地铺叙。

It is an important part of every application, for some graduate schools the most important one: The letter of motivation. It helps selection committees recognize a candidate's academic enthusiasm, the most reliable sign for the personal perseverance necessary to make it to the PhD finish line. Academics has summarized what you should include in your personal statement - and what you would do better to leave out.

Personal motivation is one of the most reliable predictors of a successful dissertation project. Whether it's academic passion, the prospect of career advancement or a higher salary - with the right goal in mind, many PhD students successfully weather even the most difficult periods in the dissertation process. But eventhough one's desire for career advancement may well provide enough personal drive for an individual to push through, German graduate schools prefer those PhD students who are looking to pursue a career in academia, motivated by personal idealism orscientific enthusiasm. That is why the letter of motivation is an important indicator for many German graduate schools during the selection process. After all, those in charge of making the decision need to find out, which candidates have the necessary perseverance and are in it with their whole heart instead of just professional advantage. Therefore, the letter of motivation is your chance to give a personal note to the application andconvince the committee of your passion for research and science.

What you should include in your letter of motivation - and what you should leave out

Graduate schools in Germany seek motivated PhD students. In the letter, you should describe your motivation to pursue your research using tangible (真实的) examples. These could be anything from your personal connection to the country, whose society you want to discuss in your dissertation, or the passion for technology that you discovered during a volunteer engagement that now pushes you towards acareer in research and development. At the same time, you need to be careful not to rely too much on personal anecdote: Unlike the "personalstatements" that most American universities ask for, the letter of motivation should not become too personal. More importantly, you should illustrate how you have already prepared yourself for a career in academia and why now is the right time for you to pursue a PhD at a German graduate school. The letter of motivation should not,however, be used as a platform to explain potential gaps in your vita, unlessthose breaks contributed to your decision to write a dissertation. "Don't explain your deficits,"recommends Andreas Stützer, who helps students across Germany write their letter of motivation. "Instead, you should document your strengths and show the selection committee why you are the right person for the position."

No question: to accomplish all of that in one to two pages is a walk in the park. Nonetheless, many applicants get lost in empty phrases that bore readers ratherthan exciting them- and thus give away a great opportunity to impress the members of theselection committee. To avoid sharing that fate, allow as much time as possiblefor the preparation of the letter of motivation and go about it methodically -for example by following the academics-plan in four steps.

A convincing letter of motivation in four steps

Step 1 - Theconcept

First,you should think about (a) why you are pursuing a PhD, (b) what qualities you bring to the program, and (c) why the graduate school you are applying to isthe right one for you. Brainstorm for ideas, collect them and shape them into aconvincing concept. Make sure that everything is perfectly tailored to the specific graduate school's expectations, for example the location, research opportunities or faculty at the university you are applying to.

Step 2 -Layout/Formalities

Justlike the rest of the application materials, the letter of motivation should have a personalized, consistent letterhead. Use the setup function of your word processor to ensure that the font, line spacing (1,5 or 2), and margins convey your professionalism. And: Make sure you are aware of the graduate school's preferred formatting expectations and standards. Do they ask for one or two pages? Is there a maximum number of words? Do they prescribe font size or linespacing? Of course, you should adhere to such standards. If no such standard sexist, we recommend submitting a letter of motivation no longer than twodouble-spaced pages (ca. 750words).

Step 3 - Thestructure

Justlike every academic essay, your letter of motivation should open with an introduction that can berecognized as such and be followed by the main body of your writing. However, it makes senseto start writing the main part first and then formulate the introduction toyour letter of motivation last. After writing the body, you will have a better understanding of how to summarize its contents. After all, the first sentencesusually briefly summarizethe arguments that are discussed in the main part. This strategy willhelp you create a common thread that will run through your letter and culminatein an effective conclusion, which once more indicates your personal advantages.

Step 4 -Fine-tuning

Eventhough complex syntactical constructions are popular among academics, you should avoid them in your letter of motivation. Instead of unnerving the reader with long sentences, you should keep them short and simple. Try to get feedback from friends and fellow students, who will give useful advice and find spellingerrors that may have escaped your attention. Spelling and grammar are criticalfactors in every application: Overlooking mistakes in your own application demonstrates a lack of thoroughness that may lead the selection committee toconclude that you are not a careful researcher. Such errors are seen asindicators that the applicant's work lacks quality and are frequent reasons fora candidate's rejection.

I hold MSc degree in Electronics and Telecommunication from the <NAME> University and I would like to apply for the PhD program in <NAME OF THE PROGRAMME> at  <NAME> University. After completing this PhD program, I plan to continue my research in the field of network protocols and architectures. My goal is to become a faculty memberat a leading university and to investigate the improvements that can be done in actual networks to make them compatible with modern ones. I am very excited by ATM networks and MPLS, as both of them have major applications in traffic engineering. From practical experience, and study, I have a strong foundation in routing protocols (RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF) WAN technologies (Frame Relay, PPP, ISDN),IEEE 802.1D, 802.1Q standards, traffic filtering (Linux iptables, Ciscoaccess-lists) and traffic shaping. On the faculty I was a good student, Isituated on the 10-th place (from aproximatively 200 students) considering the average of the first 5 years of study, and on the 2nd  place (from 16 students at my specialization)in my last year of study (master).
